The Owen County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) was organized in 1946 by a referendum vote of county landowners. It was the 33rd such district to be organized in Indiana. District boundaries include all of Owen County.

Purpose

It is the legal responsibility of the Owen County Soil and Water Conservation District to carry out a program of natural resource use, development and conservation within the boundaries of Owen County. The purpose of this program is to identify the problems and propose solutions which will serve as a guide to the Board of Supervisors in carrying out this responsibility.

Statement of Objectives

  •     To provide for the use, conservation, development and improvement of soil, water, woodland and wildlife environmental resources.

  •     To develop understanding through education of Owen County residents,  their dependence upon soil, water and environmental resources and the responsibility of conserving and improving these resources.

  •     To provide a progressive program of service and information to individual landowners.

  •      To coordinate services available from local, state and federal agencies and organizations into an effective program of assistance to landowners.

  •      To bring about the realization of the need for long-range planning in natural resources in Owen County.
